This is by no means an exhaustive list. Here are a few local (Santa Fe plus) places to rent or buy cross country equipment from. At the very bottom are links to some online places with good equipment selection and knowledgeable staff. I would always recommend calling the stores first and making sure they have what you are looking for before making the trip. After bad snow years (like 2005-06) stores tend to lower their stock due to low demand, so even if they have skis for rent or sale they probably don’t have that many, so it’s worth calling ahead! GearWest – call them, they know everything and have very helpful recommendations!
http://www.gearwest.com/ Also, they catalog has more than the website and includes tips on what to get for ski packages for different levels and ages and more. In my experience, their website lags in updating the new gear which sometimes sells out without ever getting put up, so request a catalog if you are interested. Great customer service.
Akers Cross Country Ski Equipment
http://www.akers-ski.com/ They have everything and tend to have more backcountry stuff than other places. They have a lot of affordable package deals (skis, boots, poles all together). My beginner stuff was from them as well as my backcountry and they are great.
